This tool is designed to allow the installation of new bearings in a Zipp ZR1 rear hub body. This hub design is found in Zipp's 303 Firecrest, 404 Firecrest and 808 Firecrest wheels.
The ZR1 rear hub is a bit of an oddity in that the bearing is pressed onto the axle rather than into the hub body, as is the norm with other hubs.
How To Use
Zipp's service manual for the ZR1 can be found here.
- Removal of the drive side bearing from the axle: Page 9 step 5 of the Zipp ZR1 service procedure can be completed without a vice or a hammer by sliding our ZR1 adaptor over the short end of the axle (in place of the vice). You'll notice that the bore is wider on one end of the adaptor; put this wider opening end facing the bearing. Install the rest of the over-axle press after the adaptor, and now, by screwing the press together, the bearing will be pressed off the axle.
- Installing the new bearing on the axle: Page 12 step 3 to page 13 step 4 of the service manual will again be possible without a hammer. Put our adaptor onto the longer end of the axle, this time with the smaller bore of part B against the new bearing. Follow it up with the over-axle press's longer drift. Slide the shorter over-axle drift onto the shorter end of the axle, and again use the threaded rod and T-bars to tighten this assembly, pressing the bearing into place, just until you feel the bearing bottom out against the shoulder on the axle.
- Installing the axle & bearing into the hub body: Refring to page 13 step 6 to page 14 step 8 of the manual, place the axle/bearing into the hub, put the wider end of the adaptor shorter end of the axle against the bearing, followed by the shorter over-axle drift. Put the longer over-axle drift on to the other side of the axle where it protrudes from the non-drive side of the hub. Again, use the threaded rod and T-bars to snug the bearings gently into place.
- Installing the non-drive side bearing: With the adaptor and press drifts in the same arrangement as before, but now with the non-drive side ebaring in place, the press can be tightened to drive the second bearing into place.
Bearing Removal
This bearing remover can be ordered 'drifts only, and use the threaded rod from the Zipp package.
Front Hub and Freehub
Our tools can be selected either by the bearing size or by the bearing's standard reference code.
Standard references take the form of a three or four digit number, such as 688, or 6902 for example. These codes are often moulded onto the bearing's seal. You might see something like 6902-2RS on the seal. The first digits are the standard reference. The second part (2RS in this case) refers to the seal type and doesn't matter for tool selection.
Alternatively, tools can be selected by their inside (ID) and outside (OD) diameters and width.
Note that each tool is specific to one bearing size and can’t be used on bearings with different dimensions.
